The litter of puppies

The female dog will carry her young from 58 to 63 days before her puppies are born. The puppy is born blind with their eyes shut and are very helpless. Their eyes open at about 10 to 14 days after birth. The mother provides milk for her young. It is important to provide lots of good nutritious dog food for her at this time. She needs extra food to nurse those pups.

The puppies incisor teeth will start coming in around 2 to 3 weeks. They can begin eating wet food during their 4Th week. Start teaching them not to bite at this time by giving chew toys and small raw hide skins for teething on. The mother will keep feeding them milk. Keep fresh water at all times for them also. By the time they are 6 to 7 weeks they can be fully weened from the mother and eating dry food. During the weening period the mother should have a place to go to get away from all those teeth that will scratch her underside causing soreness. I made a pen where the mother could jump over a short section to go in and out, for relief from her young pups. Keep fresh water for the pups at all times. Feed them plenty of puppy chow during the day. Always keep their pen clean. A clean pen is a healthy pen.

When puppies are young it is good to interact, with gentleness, patients, and kindness. Socialize them with other people and animals during this young age too. This teaches them to be gentle well socialized dogs as they grow up. This gentle and kind interaction while they are young also helps them to want to learn and makes them feel secure with and around other humans. Lots of treats and praise go along way.

Kindness, patients and gentleness is the key to a well adjusted and good tempered dog.

You can find some excellent books on training the puppy. Start them young and they will make you a proud owner.

I love labs. I've got a mongrel lab mix at the moment-and he's hyper like he's part Golden Retriever, or something; but I love him just the same. . . .

You mongrel lab mix sounds like a wonderful, faithful, beautiful dog.

Our 4 yr old male Lab is a bit hyper still too. He will play ball all day long if he could.

Oh he is a very loving animal! We live in the country, rural Texas; and everyone lets their dogs roam free. . . .except us, at the moment, because we can't keep him from chasing the neighbor's horse, who we are afraid will kick, and kill him.

Cute pups! Sad about Ariel. We've had several litters of Labs and Goldies, and I was always sad when the last puppy was sold.
